136년 전 외국인 선교사가 바라본 조선의 모습이 처음으로 공개됐다. Firsthand accounts of 19th-century Korea written by an American missionary 136 years ago have been unveiled for the first time.
국가기록원이 보건의 날(4월 7일)을 맞아 양화진기록관이 소장한 ‘로제타 셔우드 홀의 두루마리 기행편지’를 복원해 처음 선보였다.
To mark National Health Day (April 7), the National Archives of Korea unveiled for the first time the restored scrolls of travel letters by Rosetta Sherwood Hall housed at the Yanghwajin Archives.
이 기행편지는 미국 의료선교사 로제타 셔우드 홀이 1890년 의료선교를 위해 미국을 떠난 시점부터 조선 도착 이후 초기 생활까지 꼼꼼히 기록했다. 총 94장의 편지를 이어 붙인 길이 31.8m의 두루마리 형태로 제작됐다.
The travelogue meticulously records her journey from leaving the United States in 1890 for medical missionary work to her early life after arriving in Joseon.
It consists of 94 letters connected into a scroll measuring 31.8 meters in length.
편지에는 외국인 선교사의 시선으로 본 19세기 열악했던 조선의 의료 환경과 주민들의 일상이 생생하게 담겼다.
The letters vividly depict the poor medical conditions and everyday life of people in 19th-century Joseon from the perspective of a foreign missionary.
전통 한옥 진료소인 ‘보구녀관(普救女館)’의 모습과 가마, 전통 혼례, 고종이 청나라 사절단을 맞이하는 행렬 등 로제타가 직접 촬영한 희귀 사진 59점도 함께 수록됐다.
They also include 59 rare photographs taken by Hall herself, showing Bogunyeogwan — a traditional Hanok-style clinic for women — as well as palanquins, traditional weddings and processions led by King Gojong to receive envoys from the Qing Dynasty.
국가기록원은 자료가 한국 근대 의료의 시작과 당시 생활상을 보여주는 중요한 사료적 가치를 지닌다고 설명했다.
The National Archives said the materials hold significant historical value as they show the beginnings of modern medicine in Korea and the lifestyle of the time.
로제타 셔우드 홀은 19세기 서울과 평양에서 43년간 활동한 미국 의료선교사로, 국내 최초 여성 전문 병원 설립과 서양의학 여의사 양성에 기여한 인물이다.
Rosetta Sherwood Hall worked in Seoul and Pyongyang for 43 years and contributed to establishing Korea’s first women’s hospital and training female doctors in Western medicine.
