세계적인 현대미술 축제 ‘제16회 광주비엔날레’가 4일 개막식을 열고 72일간의 대장정에 돌입했다. This year’s Gwangju Biennale, a major global contemporary art festival, held its opening ceremony on Sept. 4 to begin its 72-day run.
‘너는 네 삶을 바꿔야 한다'(You must change your life)를 주제로 내건 이번 비엔날레는 개인의 삶부터 사회, 역사, 우주에 이르기까지 변화와 실천의 가치를 동시대 미술로 조명한다.
Under the theme “You Must Change Your Life,” this year’s edition explores the value of change and action through contemporary art, spanning individual lives, society, history and the universe.
특히 전남광주통합특별시 출범이라는 전환기에 맞춰 세계와 지역을 잇는 문화예술 플랫폼의 역할을 확장하고, 도심 곳곳에서 현대미술과 지역 문화 자산을 함께 선보인다.
Coinciding with a time of transition, namely the launch of Gwangju-Jeonnam Integrated Special City, the event is expanding its role as a cultural and artistic platform connecting regional communities with the world by showcasing contemporary art alongside regional cultural assets throughout the city.
이날 개막식에는 민형배 전남광주통합특별시장, 윤범모 광주비엔날레 대표이사, 호추니엔 예술총감독을 비롯해 한스 울리히 오브리스트 서펜타인 갤러리 디렉터, 클라라 킴 로스앤젤레스 현대미술관(MOCA) 수석 큐레이터 등 국내외 미술계 인사와 시민 500여 명이 참석했다.
The opening ceremony attracted about 500 people including Gwangju Mayor Min Hyeong-bae, Gwangju Biennale Foundation President Youn Bummo and Ho Tzu Nyen, a Singaporean visual artist and curator who is the Biennale’s artistic director, as well as figures from art communities at home and abroad including Hans Ulrich Obrist, the Swiss artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London, and Clara Kim, senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
민형배 전남광주통합특별시장은 “광주비엔날레는 지난 30년간 시대의 질문에 예술로 답을 찾아왔고 그 출발에는 5·18의 기억과 민주주의, 인권, 평화의 정신이 있다” 며 “이번 전시가 인간과 생명을 바라보는 시선을 넓히고 평화를 향한 새로운 가능성을 여는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다.
“The Gwangju Biennale has spent the past 30 years seeking answers through art to the questions of our times, rooted in the memories of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and the spirit of democracy, human rights and peace,” Mayor Min said. “I hope this exhibition is an opportunity to broaden our perspectives on humanity and life and open new possibilities for peace.”
올해 광주비엔날레는 5일부터 오는 11월 15일까지 광주비엔날레전시관을 비롯한 광주 일대에서 펼쳐진다. 22개국 43개 팀이 참여해 본전시와 파빌리온 등 다채로운 프로그램을 선보인다.
Through Nov. 15 at Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall in Buk-gu District and other venues across the city, the event has 43 teams from 22 countries participating in a range of programs including the main exhibition and pavilions.
