For the 11th time, Korea has been elected to the United Nations (U.N.) Economic and Social Council. 한국이 유엔 경제이사회(ECOSOC) 이사국에 통산 11번째 선출됐다.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 5 said the country will serve the 2027–29 term after its election the day before at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
4일(현지시간) 제80차 유엔총회에서 실시된 ECOSOC 이사국 선거에서 한국이 2027~2029년 임기 이사국으로 당선됐다고 외교부가 5일 밝혔다.
Comprising 54 member states, the council is the world body’s main platform for overseeing discussions on economy, society and development under the U.N. Charter.
ECOSOC는 유엔 헌장상 경제·사회·개발 분야 논의를 총괄하는 주요 기관으로 총 54개 회원국으로 구성됐다.
Malaysia and the Maldives were also elected in the Asia- Pacific group along with Korea. 아시아·태평양 그룹에선 한국과 말레이시아, 몰디브가 함께 이사국으로 선출됐다.
The ministry said, “As a responsible global leader and a member of the council’s executive board, we will actively participate in discussions on major global issues such as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change and digital transformation and make tangible contributions to taking on the international community’s common challenges in the economic, social and development sectors.”
외교부는 “글로벌 책임국가이자 ECOSOC 이사국으로서 지속가능발전목표(SDGs) 이행, 기후변화, 디지털 전환 등 주요 글로벌 현안 대응 논의에 적극 참여하고 경제·사회·개발 분야 국제사회 공동의 도전 과제 해결에도 실질적으로 기여해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
