한국문화 확산과 함께 전 세계에서 한국어와 한국문화를 배우는 거점이 꾸준히 늘고 있다. The number of schools offering education in the Korean language and culture is steadily increasing in tandem with the spread of Hallyu (Korean Wave).
문화체육관광부(문체부)는 올해 23개국 29개소의 세종학당을 신규 지정했다고 30일 밝혔다. 이로써 전 세계 89개국 273개소에서 한국어와 한국문화 강좌를 들을 수 있게 됐다.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on June 30 announced its designation this year of 29 more branches of King Sejong Institute in 23 countries, raising the overall figure to 273 in 89 states.
이번 신규 지정에는 그동안 세종학당이 없던 그리스, 르완다, 스리랑카 등이 포함됐다.
Among the additions are the first such branches in Greece, Rwanda and Sri Lanka.
올해 지정된 학당 중 19개소는 국내 19개 교육기관과 협력해 운영한다. 서울대학교를 비롯한 9개 대학이 처음으로 사업에 참여했다. 국내 대학의 세종학당 참여는 해외 우수 인재 유치와 대학의 국제화 역량 강화에 힘을 보탤 것으로 기대된다.
Nineteen of the 29 will be operated in cooperation with educational institutions of the host countries. Seoul National University and eight other Korean schools will participate in the program for the first time.
Participation by Korean universities in the Sejong Academy program is also expected to help attract talented students abroad and raise the global competitiveness of such institutions.
지난해 전 세계 세종학당의 온·오프라인 수강생은 23만 9020명으로 역대 최다를 기록했다. 올해 신규 지정 공모에도 최근 5년 중 가장 많은 45개국 102개 기관이 신청해 높은 한국어 학습 수요를 다시 한번 입증했다.
Last year, the number of students online and offline at the branches hit a record-high 239,020. This year’s applications drew interest from 102 institutions in 45 countries, the highest in five years and underscoring high global demand for Korean-language education.
문체부는 앞으로도 늘어나는 한국어 교육 수요에 맞춰 세종학당을 지속적으로 확대할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
The ministry pledged to continue expanding the Sejong Academy network to meet rising demand for Korean-language education worldwide.
